How to ask customers for testimonials

To ask for testimonials, send every customer the same short request soon after the job, ask two or three specific questions, welcome honest answers good or bad, and get their permission, including how they want to be named, before you share anything.

Ask soon, ask everyone

The best time is just after the result shows up. Send the same request to every customer so your testimonials reflect your real work.

Ask specific questions

What were you hoping for, how did it turn out, what would you change. Specific answers are more useful and more believable than a star rating.

Get permission in writing

Record that the customer agreed to be quoted and how they want to be named. Keep that record with the testimonial.

Quick answers

Can I edit a testimonial?

Fix a typo if they agree. Never change what they meant, and never combine customers into one quote.

Can I offer a discount for a testimonial?

If you do, offer it to everyone whatever they say, and disclose it next to the testimonial.
